About us

Welcome to the Bexley Diabetes UK Group

Hello and thank you for visiting our website!

I’m Ben Martin, Chairman of the Bexley Diabetes UK Group. Since our formation in August 2000, we’ve grown from a small support circle into a vibrant community of over 700 members. In 2005, we became a registered voluntary group under Diabetes UK.

Our mission is simple: to support anyone affected by diabetes—whether you’re living with the condition, caring for someone who is, or simply want to learn more. We provide reliable information, friendly advice, and a safe space for people to connect and share experiences.

What We Do

Our group is built around mutual support. We focus on:

  • Sharing up-to-date information on diabetes care and treatment
  • Encouraging best practices through personal experiences and professional insights
  • Advocating for high standards of local healthcare
  • Taking part in regional and national diabetes research as lay representatives

Monthly Meetings

We meet on the third Friday of each month (except August), from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM, at:

United Reformed Church

Geddes Place, Bexleyheath, Kent DA6 7DJ

Each meeting includes talks from guest speakers—ranging from healthcare professionals to inspirational individuals living with diabetes. Topics often cover:

  • General diabetes care
  • Healthy eating and lifestyle choices
  • Eye and foot care
  • Personal journeys with diabetes

We welcome all individuals and families, especially those newly diagnosed or seeking community support. Meetings are friendly and informal, with an average of 30+ attendees. A £2 donation is appreciated to help cover hall rental.

To join us or find out more, call our local answering service at 07775 305110.

Stay Connected

Can’t make it to the meetings? No problem! You can stay in touch through our monthly email newsletter, which includes:

  • Updates on diabetes care and research
  • News from the group
  • Details of upcoming events

If you’d prefer a printed version, we’re happy to mail it—just provide your address along with 11 second-class stamps to cover postage.

Beyond Meetings: Events & Social Activities

We host a variety of fun and engaging social events throughout the year, including:

  • Scenic group walks and day trips
  • Quiz nights and theatre outings
  • A festive Christmas buffet
  • Stalls at local community and charity events

Each monthly meeting also includes a small raffle and a stall selling second-hand books, CDs, and handcrafted items to help support our group.

Important Note

While we provide helpful information and peer support, it’s essential to follow the medical advice given by your GP, Diabetes Nurse, or consultant. If something is unclear, we’ll help you better understand your condition so you can have informed conversations with your healthcare team.

Join Us

Whether you’re newly diagnosed, a long-time member of the diabetes community, or a friend or relative looking to help, you’re warmly invited to join us. Come along, meet others, ask questions, and be part of a supportive, knowledgeable group that’s here for you.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
